Dear Readers,
The learning/HR function has the responsibility to design and deliver training to support the company’s current and future needs - with our ultimate goal being to improve the way our organizations perform.
The key to success in the training and HR profession is taking action – but this is difficult to do without a clear direction, measurements and resources. Collecting best practices from other organizations through benchmarking is a procedure that should be done by every company to keep ideas fresh and to ensure that trends and innovative programs do not slip by unnoticed.
The articles selected this month provide ideas on how to be effective, accountable, diverse, sustainable and innovative. By taking a critical look at our learning organization, we can create a culture that demonstrates value to the company, while achieving our ultimate goal – improved performance.

Count on Corporate Classrooms
By Catherine Rezak
Business Flashy e-learning has its place, for sure, but the traditional classroom isn’t ready to be counted out, especially when used to its best advantage. That's where "discovery learning" comes into play. Make no mistake: Online learning is here to stay. While we're at it, let’s go ahead and get this out of the way, too: There's plenty to like about it, particularly in the business world. Having employees use it at their convenience is a good thing. And it's even worth noting that it allows some companies to offer training when they might not otherwise try. Learn More

Learning Measurements: It’s Time to Align
By Mohana Radhakrishnan
Business Chief learning officers face increased pressure from the C-suite to justify expenses and quantify business decisions. It’s time to re-examine how to measure learning and make a change. Your training classes have a 92 percent fill rate. A whopping 95 percent of your employees have completed one or more formal training programs. You’re thrilled to see these positive metrics — until upper management asks you to define what employees are learning, where they are learning it and how this learning impacts the company’s bottom line. Research Reveals Four Lessons About Diversity and Inclusion
By Kevin Oakes
With talent management all the rage today, it would be natural to assume companies recognize that diversity and inclusion have a direct impact on critical talent issues. In fact, previous research by i4cp identified the ability to engage a diverse workforce and create an environment in which diversity is accepted and welcomed is essential to attract and keep top talent now and in the future. Yet, most companies are doing little to proactively create this. Learn More

Strategies for Taking E-Learning Initiatives to a New, Green Level
By Silke Fleischer
When I started an electric bicycle business three years ago and sold my car, my life changed dramatically. Once I became aware of my environmental impact, I couldn’t turn back. How could I continue printing the 500-page Adobe PDF document when this action generates 15 pounds of CO2, 50 gallons of waste water, and five pounds of solid waste when there was a better alternative? Or how could I continue commuting 30 miles alone when I knew it generates six tons of CO2 annually that can easily be dropped in half by simply carpooling? The knowledge about the impact of every choice we make is available in today’s instant-access world. Learn More

Moodle Goes Corporate
By Sarah Fister Gale
Companies of all sizes have begun to embrace Moodle, an open- source learning management system that can be downloaded free and operates with virtually every other training-related software system on the market. While many companies may be skeptical of the value of open-source or free downloadable software systems, Moodle, a learning management system, is proving that high value doesn’t necessarily correlate to high price. Moodle was created by a developer in Perth, Australia, and over the past several years has developed an almost cult-like following. It currently has more than a half-million users and developers who blog daily at Moodle.org about how they use it and how they can improve it. They also share best practices from around the world.
